Folsom Lake State Recreation Area can be found near the base of the Sierra foothills. Many who venture here do so for the chances to enjoy some hiking, biking, running, picnicking, horseback riding, waterskiing, and boating. And for those who like to take part in fishing, you’ll find lots of fish here like trout, catfish, both big and small mouth bass, and perch.
With its urban setting and the accessibility of the parks entrances, there are a variety of transportation methods are available to park visitors at Folsom Lake. A local bus services can be used to reach Folsom Lake. Private vehicles as well as bicycles, horseback, and foot travel are the most frequently used methods of park entry.
While vacationing at Folsom Lake, be sure to check out the Folsom Powerhouse. This was once the greatest operative electrical plant in the entire American continent. Between the years of 1885 and 1952, over 11,000 volts of electricity was produced here for the people of Sacramento.
Visitation is highest from April through September. In the spring months when school is still in session, evenings and weekends are the times of highest lake activity, so be sure to follow the courtesy procedures at Lake Tahoe boat launches. With bass fishing tournaments, rowing competitions, foot races, horseback endurance rides, sailboat regattas, and various other organized activities occur frequently throughout the year there isn’t a bad time of year to visit Folsom Lake!
One of the highlights here at Folsom Lake is the Folsom Dam. The lake was created back in 1955 by this dam, which was a total length of nine miles. You can find this dam about 23 miles northeast of Sacramento; it primary is used for flood control but also stores water for irrigation and domestic use.
You won’t find any lodging inside this park; however Folsom Lake has three campgrounds — Beal’s Point and Peninsula campgrounds which are located on Folsom Lake and Negro Bar campground at Lake Natoma. If you aren’t the camping type, there are several places close by where you can spend your evenings. Folsom, Roseville, Rancho Cordova, and Sacramento are quite close and have a variety of overnight accommodations.
Wildlife here at Folsom Lake is quite abundant. For example, you may find black-tailed deer, ground squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, gray foxes, rabbits, coyotes, and more. Bobcats and lions may even be spotted occasionally. Canadian geese usually spend their winters here at the lake along with heron and several types of ducks.
If you’re looking for food near the park, you are in luck. Many local restaurants can be found nearby. And summer food concessions are found at Granite Bay, Beal’s Point, and the Ravine Marina Store.
At Granite Bay, you’ll find lots of stuff to do with your family. There is a sandy beach, swim area, and even barbeque pits perfect for family picnics. The snack bar is always ready for your business too. They not only provide tasty treats but beach rentals too.
